STAINED TEETH TREATMENT
Thanks to evolving dental technology, as it’s possible to treat both internally or externally discolored tooth to enhance esthetics. The discoloration is due to various reasons, depending on the cause of staining
Tooth stains or discolorations are basically of three types:
EXTRINSIC STAINS
It refers to staining outside the teeth that happens to external factors like -
- Coffee, tea, wine, colas, colored food stuffs.
- Smoking and tobacco chewing.
- Plaque and tartar deposition.
Treatment
- Regular Professional Cleaning.
- Proper home care that takes into account brushing, flossing and rinsing after meals.
- Bleaching/ teeth whitening procedures- bleaching can be done at a dental clinic or at home.
- Porcelain Veneer treatment. This is suitable where extrinsic stains are significant or deeply set.
INTRINSIC STAINS
It refers to cases wherein there is discoloration of the inner surface (dentin) of the tooth due to any of the following reasons
- Too much exposure to fluoride during early childhood;
- Usage of Tetracycline Antibiotics by your mother during the second half of her pregnancy
- Trauma resulting in the tooth being affected at a young age. This in turn may lead to internal bleeding.
- Rare genetic condition called Dentino genesis imperfect which causes gray, amber or purple discolorations.
- Fluorosis Stains and Genetic Stains, with staining resulting from Trauma.
Treatment
- Dental Porcelain Veneers or Dental Composite Bonding Options which can be considered after discussion with the Dentist.
- Root canal treatment to help remove the inner part of the tooth (the pulp), before it gets decayed and darkens. Following this, internal bleaching can be done OR a Ceramic Crown can be placed. This treatment is recommended only in case of Intrinsic Stains that are caused by trauma and damage to a nerve or blood vessel in a tooth.
NOTE: In case of children, early exposure to fluorides must be avoided until the enamel of the tooth is being formed. Also, the usage of Tetracycline Antibiotics at an early age, must be avoided.
AGE-RELATED STAINS
This happens as a result of a combination of extrinsic and intrinsic factors like:
- Dentin naturally yellows over time. When that happens, the enamel that covers the teeth gets thinner with age, which allows the dentin to show through.
- Foods like tea, coffee, colored foodstuffs, tobacco and smoking, all cause the teeth to stain as one gets older.
- Chipped off /broken teeth or other injuries show discoloration , especially when the pulp has been damaged.
Treatment
A combination of professional Teeth Cleaning, Teeth Bleaching (Whitening), Porcelain Veneers, Crowns, and/or Dental Composite Bonding, is recommended to treat age-related stains. The same must be considered after a thorough check-up with the Dentist.
